الِافْتِتَاح The Opening

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

اللَّهُمَّ يَا مَنْ لَا يَغِيبُ عَنْهُ نِدَاءٌ،
وَلَا يَثْقُلُ عَلَيْهِ دُعَاءٌ،
يَا مَنْ قَالَ:
﴿ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ﴾

هَا أَنَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ.

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

O Allāh — O You from Whom no call is hidden,
upon Whom no supplication is a burden,
O You Who said: "Call upon Me and I will respond" —

here I am, before You.

يَا مُجِيبُ The One Who Responds

يَا مُجِيبَ الدَّعَوَاتِ،
إِنَّ لِي عِنْدَكَ دَعَوَاتٍ
سَكَنَتْ قَلْبِي حَتَّىٰ صِرْنَ مِنِّي،
أَجْهَرُ بِهَا فِي بَعْضِ اللَّيَالِي رَاجِيًا،
وَأَبْكِي بِهَا فِي أُخَرَ،
وَقَدْ نَسِيتُ كَيْفَ أُخَلِّيهَا.

فَاسْمَعْهَا كَمَا سَمِعْتَ
نِدَاءَ زَكَرِيَّا نِدَاءً خَفِيًّا.

Qur'ān 19:3 · Maryam · Zakariyyā ﷺ

O Responder to supplications —
I carry before You du'ās that have settled in my heart
until they became part of me.
I voice them with hope on some nights,
and weep through them on others,
and I have forgotten how to let them go.

Hear them as You heard the hidden call of Zakariyyā.

Scholarly Anchor

Zakariyyā ﷺ called upon Allāh after decades of longing — Qur'ān describes it as nidā'an khafiyyā, a hidden call. Ibn ʿAṭāʾillāh: "He made you stand at the door of asking — would He close it on you after opening it to you?" (Ḥikma 75). The Prophetic hadith adds: "Allāh loves those who are persistent in du'ā."

يَا قَادِرُ The Most Capable

يَا قَادِرُ،
أَنْتَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ،
وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ،
وَلَوْ شِئْتَ لَأَعْطَيْتَنِي مَا أَنْتَظِرُهُ
فِي طَرْفَةِ عَيْنٍ،
بِلَا عُسْرٍ وَلَا تَأَخُّرٍ وَلَا مَشَقَّةٍ.

فَأَرْضِنِي بِاخْتِيَارِكَ فِيمَا أَخَّرْتَ،
فَإِنَّكَ ضَمِنْتَ لِي الْإِجَابَةَ
فِيمَا تَخْتَارُهُ لِي،
لَا فِيمَا أَخْتَارُهُ لِنَفْسِي.

O Most Capable —
You are able, and I am not.
You know, and I do not.
If You willed, You could give me what I await
in the blink of an eye —
without struggle, delay, or difficulty.

Make me content with Your choosing in what You have deferred,
for You have guaranteed Your response in what You choose for me —
not in what I choose for myself.

Scholarly Anchor

The Istikhāra du'ā (Bukhārī 1166) teaches the architecture of surrender: "You are capable and I am not; You know and I do not." Ibn ʿAṭāʾillāh's sixth aphorism: "He guaranteed a response in what He chooses for you, at the time He wills — not the time you will."

يَا حَكِيمُ The Most Wise

يَا حَكِيمُ،
حِينَ يَثْقُلُ عَلَيَّ الِانْتِظَارُ،
ذَكِّرْنِي أَنَّ التَّأْخِيرَ لَيْسَ رَفْضًا،
وَلَا الصَّمْتَ هَجْرًا.

فَرُبَّمَا كَانَ حِجَابًا يَصُونُنِي،
وَرُبَّمَا كَانَ إِعْدَادًا يُهَيِّئُنِي،
وَرُبَّمَا كَانَ قَصْدًا يُقَرِّبُنِي مِنْكَ
أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا كَانَ يُقَرِّبُنِي
مَا طَلَبْتُهُ.

O Most Wise —
when waiting grows heavy upon my heart,
remind me that delay is not refusal,
and silence is not abandonment.

Perhaps it is a veil that protects me,
perhaps a preparation that readies me,
perhaps an intention that draws me closer to You
more than the very thing I asked for
ever could.

Scholarly Anchor

Ibn al-Qayyim: "When Allāh withholds something from His loving servant, that withholding is itself a giving." The Qur'ān affirms: "Perhaps you dislike a thing that is good for you" (2:216). Ibn Rajab: "The waiting itself, when borne with patience, is worship."

يَا صَبُورُ The Most Patient

يَا صَبُورُ،
عَلِّمْنِي الِانْتِظَارَ بِلَا يَأْسٍ،
وَالرَّجَاءَ بِلَا مَلَلٍ،
وَاللِّينَ وَسْطَ حَمْلِ الْغَيْبِ.

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ
بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ،
أَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ،
وَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَىٰ نَفْسِي
طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ.

Yā Ḥayyu Yā Qayyūm · al-Ḥākim · Ibn Rajab · Ayyūb ﷺ · Qur'ān 21:83

O Most Patient —
teach me to wait without losing hope,
to hold onto longing without tiring,
to remain soft while carrying the weight of the unseen.

O Living, O Self-Subsisting —
by Your mercy I seek relief.
Rectify all my affairs,
and do not entrust me to myself
for the blink of an eye.

Scholarly Anchor

Ayyūb ﷺ endured his trial in silence for eighteen years, crying only: "Adversity has touched me — and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful" (21:83). Ibn al-Jawzī: "The whisperings that arise from delay are a disease that needs healing — and patience is the cure." The Prophetic formula Yā Ḥayyu Yā Qayyūm bi-raḥmatika astaghīth is what the Prophet ﷺ turned to in distress.

يَا فَتَّاحُ The Opener

يَا فَتَّاحُ،
افْتَحْ لِي مَا رَأَيْتُهُ مُغْلَقًا،
وَيَسِّرْ لِي مَا رَأَيْتُهُ مُتَعَسِّرًا،
وَاجْعَلْ لِي مَسْلَكًا
حَيْثُ لَا أَرَىٰ إِلَّا مَسَالِكَ مَسْدُودَةً.

اللَّهُمَّ لَا سَهْلَ إِلَّا مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلًا،
وَأَنْتَ تَجْعَلُ الْحَزْنَ
إِذَا شِئْتَ سَهْلًا.

O Opener —
open for me what I have seen as closed,
ease for me what I have seen as impossible,
and create a path for me
where I see only sealed roads.

O Allāh — there is no ease except what You make easy,
and You make hardship, when You will, easy.

Scholarly Anchor

The Prophetic formula "Allāhumma lā sahla illā mā jaʿaltahu sahlā" (Ibn Ḥibbān 974) is among the most beloved du'ās for breakthrough. Yūnus ﷺ cried from the darkness of the whale's belly — no overt request, only tawhīd and surrender — and Allāh called it a du'ā and answered it. The Prophet ﷺ said: "No Muslim supplicates with this du'ā for anything but Allāh answers." (Tirmidhī 3505)

يَا رَزَّاقُ The Provider

يَا رَزَّاقُ،
لَا تَجْعَلْ قَلْبِي مُتَعَلِّقًا
بِمَا أَرْجُوهُ دُونَكَ،
بَلِ اجْعَلْ تَعَلُّقَهُ بِكَ أَوَّلًا،
حَتَّىٰ مَهْمَا جَرَىٰ
يَبْقَىٰ مُمْتَدًّا بِقُرْبِكَ.

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ
عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ،
وَاجْعَلْنِي بِكَ غَنِيًّا
وَإِلَيْكَ فَقِيرًا.

Du'ā ʿAlī r.a. · Tirmidhī 3563 · Mūsā ﷺ · Qur'ān 28:24 · Sufi: Taʿalluq al-Qalb

O Provider —
do not let my heart become attached
to what I hope for apart from You.
Let its attachment be to You first,
so that whatever comes to pass,
it remains sustained by Your nearness.

O Allāh, suffice me by Your bounty
so I need no one besides You —
and make me rich through You,
and poor toward You.

Scholarly Anchor

Mūsā ﷺ, exhausted and alone, asked only: "My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me" (28:24) — naming no specific gift. In Sufi terminology, taʿalluq (the heart's attachment) directed at anything other than Allāh becomes a prison. Al-Ghazālī: "The cure is not to abandon the gift, but to ensure the heart clings to the Giver."

يَا وَدُودُ The Most Loving

يَا وَدُودُ،
إِنْ كَانَ هَٰذَا الَّذِي أَسْأَلُهُ
خَيْرًا لِي فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَايَ وَآخِرَتِي
فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي
مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يُؤَذِيَ قَلْبِي فِي الطَّرِيقِ.

وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَكْتُوبًا لِي
فَأَبْدِلْنِي مِنْهُ خَيْرًا مِنْهُ،
وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ،
ثُمَّ أَرْضِنِي بِهِ.

Du'ā al-Istikhāra · Bukhārī 1166 · Muslim 918 · Qur'ān 85:14

O Most Loving —
if what I am asking for is good for me
in my faith, my life, and my hereafter,
ordain it for me and make it easy —
without harming my heart along the way.

And if it is not written for me,
replace it with something better,
ordain what is good for me wherever it may be,
then make me content with it.

Scholarly Anchor

The Istikhāra du'ā closes with "thumma arḍinī bih" — "then make me content with it" — the precise liturgical language of true surrender. Muslim 918 adds: "O Allāh, reward me in my affliction and replace it with something better." Allāh describes Himself as Al-Wadūd — the Loving — twice in the Qur'ān (11:90; 85:14), always in contexts of mercy and return.

الْخَاتِمَة The Closing

إِلَٰهِي أَنْتَ مَقْصُودِي
وَرِضَاكَ مَطْلُوبِي،
فَحَسْبِيَ اللهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ،
عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ
وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ.

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ.

Naqshbandī Wird · Qur'ān 9:129 · Yūnus ﷺ · Qur'ān 21:87

My God — You are my goal,
and Your pleasure is what I seek.
Allāh is sufficient for me; there is no god but He.
Upon Him I rely,
and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.

There is no god but You, glory be to You —
indeed I have been among the wrongdoers.

Scholarly Anchor

Ilāhī anta maqṣūdī wa-riḍāka maṭlūbī is the classical Naqshbandī declaration of tawḥīd-in-longing — the heart that has released its attachment to every specific desire and rests in the Beloved Himself. Yūnus's du'ā (21:87) is among the most powerful in the Qur'ān: the Prophet ﷺ said "No Muslim supplicates with it but Allāh responds."

آمِين Āmīn

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ نَفْسًا مُطْمَئِنَّةً،
تُؤْمِنُ بِلِقَائِكَ،
وَتَرْضَىٰ بِقَضَائِكَ،
وَتَقْنَعُ بِعَطَائِكَ.

آمِين، يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

O Allāh, we ask You for a tranquil soul
that believes in meeting You,
that is content with Your decree,
and that is satisfied with Your giving.

Āmīn, O Lord of all the worlds.
